The Zeliangrong United Front (ZUF) has appealed for united commemoration of the martyrdom of Haipou Jadonang to be observed on the August 29 in all respective places of Zeliangrong kindred villages and across the country.
A statement said that this time the day will be observed with a significant importance to mark our determined demand for official national recognition of Haipou Jadonang as a national freedom fighter and to expedite finding an early settlement of the long drawn aspiration of the Zeliangrong kindred people.
“It has been 92nd years; almost a century since the Government of India has neglected and denied of his contributions and sacrifices made for defending his country from foreign rule. The historical account of Jadonang is well proven on equal footing with any other freedom fighters of India. He was no lesser in all measure than any others to be called a freedom fighter of the free India Movement, who stood firm in the principle of true patriotism and nationalism”, a statement by Alur Seikho, Deputy Secretary of ZUF said.
It added that recalling the instances of Jadonang movement known to the British India as Naga Raj Movement. He has denounced and resisted the colonial administration, refusing to pay taxes, labor, or any other British imposition on the people. The British made a scheme to arrest and nib his movement in the bud. It was when Mahatma Gandhi was organizing civil disobedient movement against the British with a slogan “Quit India”. Jadonang movement was wide spreading in the North Cachar Hills, Manipur and the Naga Hills. The interface with Khonoma was recorded in the communication between the then deputy commissioner of Naga Hills, JP Mill and JC Higgins, the then political agent of Manipur which has arisen deep security concern over the possibility of covering the whole Naga Hills posing great threats to the
Presence of the British colonial rule. Jadonang made a schedule to meet Mahatma Gandhi at Silchar in 1927 for an alliance support with the Indian freedom movement. However, with the cancelation of Gandhi’s visit to Silchar, the schedule was cancelled. The Naga Raj movement gained its momentum in 1931.
It was on February 19, 1931, Jadonang was arrested by JC Higgins with the help of JP Mills and C. Gimson, the then Deputy Commissioner of Cachar on the charge of raising Naga Raj Movement against the British India Government. He was given severe trials and imprisonment and sentenced to death.
He was hanged on the 29th August 1931 on the bank of Nambul river in Imphal. The movement was then carried forward by a teenage girl name Gaidinliu who absconded and went underground after the death of Jadonang.
