Mirabai Chanu qualifies for Tokyo Olympics in women’s 49-kg category; CM lauds

India’s Mirabai Chanu, the 2017 world champion in weightlifting, has qualified for the Tokyo Olympics in the women’s 49-kg category. The International Weightlifting Federation announced that Mirabai has qualified on the basis of her world ranking points.
The 26-year-old from Manipur lifter is ranked second in the women’s 49-kg category. As per rules of the IWF, top eight lifters in each of the 14 weight categories, including seven in the women’s group, are eligible to compete in Tokyo Games.
Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh expressed happiness over the qualification of Mirabai Chanu to represent India in the Tokyo Olympics.
In his official facebook page Chief Minister N. Biren wrote – “Hearty congratulations to our daughter Mirabai Chanu on qualifying for the upcoming Tokyo Olympics in Women’s 49 Kg category. Mirabai Chanu has been ranked 2nd in the International Weightlifting Federation’s Absolute Ranking List in the 49 Kg category. May your hard work and dedication bring laurels to the country.
