The 100th edition of World Animal Day and the 71st Wildlife Week were jointly observed at Ziontlang Village in Chandel district with active participation from the villagers.
The programme was attended by Dr. N. Munal Meitei, Divisional Forest Officer of Chandel; Th. James Chothe, Chief of Ziontlang Village; Youthsan Chothe, former chief of the village; and M. Rocky, pastor of the village, as dignitaries.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr. N. Munal Meitei said that the observance of both World Animal Day and Wildlife Week highlights the importance of protecting endangered species as well as domestic animals. He noted that this year’s World Animal Day theme, “Save Animals, Save the Planet,” reminds society of the inseparable bond between animals and the environment.
Dr. Munal further stated that the day serves as a reminder of the rights of animals and the responsibility of humans not to harm or kill them. “A world without animals will be like a barren desert,” he remarked.
He also pointed out the health and emotional benefits of domestic animals, including stress relief, lowering blood pressure, lifting moods, and strengthening family bonds. He urged the gathering to protect both wild and domestic animals.
