UCM and CSOs mourn the passing of Heikrujam Ibotombi Khuman

The United Committee Manipur (UCM) and several civil society organizations have expressed deep sorrow over the passing of Heikrujam Ibotombi Khuman, a prominent figure in Manipur’s socio-political landscape, on November 19, 2024. UCM, in an official statement, lauded his lifelong dedication to public service and his pivotal role in the founding of the organization in 2001.
Fondly known as “Ta Inao,” Ibotombi Khuman held numerous influential positions during his life, including serving as president of the International Peace and Social Advancement (IPSA), convener of the Joint Committee on Inner Line Permit System (JCILPS), and chairman of the Justice Committee for the Anglo-Manipur War of 1891. He also chaired various cultural organizations such as Naharol Yaipha Lamjingkol and Haobam Marak Irom Leikai, reflecting his commitment to preserving Manipur’s cultural heritage.
UCM highlighted his instrumental role in spearheading public movements to protect Manipur’s territorial integrity and promote social harmony. His contributions were recognized as visionary and transformative, shaping the community’s social and political progress.
On the evening of his passing, UCM members, including the Consultative Members, Central Committee, Steering Committee, and representatives from component organizations, gathered at the UCM office to pay their final respects. A two-minute silence was observed in his memory, and a solemn tribute was presented to honor his legacy.
In addition to UCM, 19 civil society organizations, including AMKIL, Nupi Samaj, Tammi Chingmi, NLANL, NIMPAL, ANUL Bishnupur, Thoubal Ima, MACHA LEIMA, EECHAL, EEVFAM, and others, extended their condolences. These groups praised his tireless efforts in advancing social and political causes and acknowledged his dedication to the welfare of Manipur’s people.
The Ningthemcha Ningshing Lup and the Major Meiraba Memorial Trust also joined in mourning his loss, emphasizing his significant role as lifetime chairman of the Justice Committee for the Anglo-Manipur War of 1891 martyrs. They acknowledged his vital contributions to preserving the history and legacy of Manipur’s freedom fighters.
Heikrujam Ibotombi Khuman’s passing marks a profound loss for Manipur, with his leadership and service leaving an enduring legacy for the community to uphold and cherish.
The Committee of Civil Societies Kangleipak (CCSK), along with various organizations including UNACSU, AMYPCO, KaPFA, UCSCK, KWWA, CHITUWA, WWOK, NYLAK, KaKIL, and the Students Union of Kangleipak (SUK), have expressed their heartfelt condolences following the passing of Heikrujam Ibotombi Khuman on November 19, 2024.
