The Organising Committee for the Two-Day Workshop on Rituals held a press conference today to announce the upcoming cultural workshop, themed “Changes in the Rituals from Birth to Death and the Impact on the Economy of Society.” The workshop is scheduled for June 22 and 23, 2024, and promises to shed light on the evolving cultural practices and their broader economic effects.
This workshop aims to address the transformations in traditional rituals and their economic implications. Topics to be discussed include the significant increase in spending on rituals such as Luhongba, Lanna Thouram, Epaal Thaba, Nahut Nareng/Nahutpa, and Kumon Firoi, and their economic impact, as well as the cultural changes resulting from these transformations and the societal repercussions of competition during Ningol Chakouba. Speakers will present papers providing in-depth analysis and insights on these issues.
The announcement follows a meeting held on June 9, 2024, by five organizations—SEACO, HERICOUN, NIPCO, LIPUL, and CCSJ—at the Press Club, which featured various cultural activities and included participation from numerous organizations and individuals dedicated to cultural preservation, including Narendra Ningomba. During this meeting, resolutions were made to form an Organising Committee to oversee the workshop. Thokchom Ibohal Meetei, the Custom Secretary of Uttra Sanglen Sanakonung, has been appointed as the Organising Committee Chairman, with Paonam Thakaba Meetei of WAMA designated as the Convenor of the organizing committee. Members from each participating organization will join the organizing committee.
