The traditional martial art form of Thang-Ta, a distinct cultural identity of Manipur, was celebrated with the release of a new production titled “Ta Khousarol-Maram Nungsetpa.” The event, organized by the Eastern Arts & Culture Foundation Manipur, took place at the foundation’s center in Arapti Mamang Leikai, Imphal East.
Renowned Thang-Ta exponent and Padma Shri awardee K. Sanathoiba Sharma emphasized the significance of preserving this art form, stating that Thang-Ta is not merely a combat technique but a spiritual and cultural discipline that embodies the deep connection between nature and human civilization.
He described “Ta Khousarol” as an essential aspect of Thang-Ta, symbolizing the divine energies that sustain life and the philosophies of warfare, hunting, and self-defense. Stressing the importance of proper knowledge in “Ta-Khousaba” (sword techniques), he underscored the need for systematic training to safeguard this martial tradition for future generations.
Thang-Ta holds immense cultural and historical value for the Meitei community, encompassing warfare techniques, national identity, and ritualistic practices. Sharma called for the integration of Thang-Ta into school curriculums to ensure its survival, stating that a strong foundation in Thang-Ta could enhance self-discipline and national pride among the youth.
The production “Ta Khousarol-Maram Nungsetpa,” released by the Eastern Arts & Culture Foundation Manipur, aims to showcase the significance of Thang-Ta and its role in Manipuri heritage. The event was attended by Eastern Arts & Culture Foundation Manipur President M. Manihar and Kyamgei Muslim Arapti Gram Panchayat Chairperson W. Birchandra, among other dignitaries.
