The Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Imphal observed the 15th Indian Organ Donation Day today with a day-long programme under the national campaign “Angdaan – Jeevan Sanjeevani Abhiyaan.” Held at the General OPD of RIMS Hospital, the event promoted the theme “Be a Lifesaver – Pledge to Donate Organ.”
Director Prof. G. Sunil Kumar Sharma administered the organ donation pledge in the presence of Medical Superintendent Prof. N. Sanjib Singh. He stressed the life-saving potential of deceased donations and expressed concern over India’s low donor rate—less than one per million. Prof. Sharma also announced plans to establish an eye bank at RIMS.
More than 500 students, faculty, and members of the public participated. A poster competition featuring over 30 students from MBBS, Nursing, and allied fields highlighted the importance of organ donation and aimed to dispel common misconceptions. Venish Keisham and Deepa Laishram of Manipur University of Culture won first and second prizes respectively, while RIMS MBBS student Nilotpal Das took third place.
Transplant coordinator Laishram Monica Devi presented RIMS’ transplant achievements. Awareness stalls and counselling booths were also set up. Two individuals pledged organ donation during the event.
