\The Puya Mei Thakhibagi Apunba Ningsing Lup (PUMANIL) observed the 292nd Puya Meithaba at Kangla today. The event featured religious rites, cultural programs, and reflections on the importance of Meitei heritage. The ritualistic commemoration is conducted every year on the 19th day of the Meitei lunar month of Mera.
A statement from PUMANIL highlighted the significance of the day, reflecting on the past, including the burning of ancient Meitei texts. The organization emphasized the importance of preserving cultural heritage and remembering this loss. According to the statement, the act of burning the sacred texts took place on August 28, 1709, during the reign of Pamheiba, also known as Garibaniwaj. This event symbolized the imposition of new religious and political systems that altered the region’s traditional values.
Dhara Khuraijam, Convenor of PUMANIL, stressed the need for the public to participate actively in the observance. The organization called on the people of Manipur to reflect on their history and resist forces that undermine cultural values.
