Naga Students’ Federation opposes proposed ‘Gau Dhwaj Yatra’

Imphal, Sept 26:

The Naga Students’ Federation (NSF) has expressed strong opposition to the upcoming ‘Gau Dhwaj Yatra,’ scheduled for September 28, which aims to promote a nationwide ban on cow slaughter. In a press release, the NSF described the event as an outright assault on the cultural, religious, and social values of the Naga people, accusing the organizers of attempting to impose external religious beliefs and practices on the Naga homeland.
The NSF commended the Nagaland State Government for denying permission for the event to be held in Kohima, viewing this decision as a recognition of the Naga people’s unique customs, traditions, and dietary practices, which are safeguarded under Article 371A of the Constitution of India.
The organization stated that despite the clear denial of permission and the NSF’s firm stance, the event organizers have chosen to proceed, which they deemed a provocation and a disrespect not only to the NSF but to the entire Naga community. The NSF issued a stern warning to the organizers and participants, affirming that such divisive activities will not be tolerated within the Naga homeland.
The Nagaland Government and the Naga Legislative Assembly (NLA) have previously clarified that the Ban on Cow Slaughter Act of 2019 will not be enforced in the state due to the protections provided under Article 371A. This constitutional provision allows the Naga people to maintain their customs, culture, and religious practices, including traditional dietary habits that may differ from those in other regions. Article 371A empowers the Naga people to make their own decisions regarding religion, culture, and land ownership, including the right to slaughter cattle according to their customs.
The NSF reaffirmed its commitment to preserving the socio-religious harmony of the Naga homeland and vowed to prevent any event that threatens this harmony or undermines the rights conferred by Article 371A. Should the organizers of the ‘Gau Dhwaj Yatra’ continue with their plans, the NSF, backed by the Naga people, will take all necessary measures to ensure the event does not occur in Nagaland. The organization emphasized that it will not hesitate to take strong and decisive action to protect their identity, land, and rights.
The NSF issued a final warning to the organizers and their supporters, stating that any attempts to hold the event will be met with swift and resolute opposition from the NSF and the Naga people. They asserted that Nagaland will not be used as a platform for divisive and inflammatory activities that contradict the region’s traditions.
