A one-day awareness campaign on Breeding and Conservation of Mithun was organised at the ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, Manipur Centre, under the NERCORMS Project.
The programme was jointly organised by the ICAR–National Research Centre (NRC) on Mithun, Nagaland, and the ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, Manipur Centre.
Chairing the programme, Head of Regional Centre Dr. S. Basanta Singh highlighted the cultural and economic importance of Mithun to tribal communities in Northeast India and urged farmers to adopt scientific livestock management practices for its sustainable conservation.
During the technical session, Senior Scientist Dr. Sapunii S. Hanah outlined ICAR-NRC on Mithun’s research initiatives on breeding, conservation, healthcare, nutrition, climate resilience and artificial insemination for genetic improvement.
Medicines, nutritional supplements and livestock management materials were distributed to Mithun farmers as part of the programme.
Around 50 farmers, including 11 women, from Kabui Khullen, Louphong and Machi villages participated in the campaign and interacted with scientists on scientific practices related to Mithun care, breeding, feeding and health management. The programme concluded with a renewed commitment to promote sustainable Mithun conservation and improve the livelihoods of Mithun-rearing communities.
