The Biodiversity, Ecology and Environment Network, Manipur (BeeNet Manipur) observes World Environment Day 2026 through a series of programmes from June 4 to 7 under the global theme, “Inspired by Nature. For Climate. For Our Future.”
According to a statement issued by BeeNet Manipur Secretary S. Bhubol, the observance will include a two-day webinar and a tree plantation programme aimed at promoting environmental awareness and climate action.
The webinar is being jointly organised by the Department of Zoology, Manipur University, BeeNet Manipur and Pole Star College, Hiyanglam Wabagai. The programme will be moderated by Prof. Mohilal Meitei, Dean, School of Life Sciences, Manipur University. On June 4, Director of Environment and Climate Change, Government of Manipur, Dr. T. Brajakumar Singh, will deliver a lecture on “World Environment Day 2026.” On June 5, Dr. Konthoujam Khelchandra Singh, Associate Professor, Department of Environmental Science, Manipur University, will speak on “Climate Action for Environmental Security and Sustainable Development.”
A tree plantation drive will be held on June 7 at Heitroi Houbi Chingdum Macha, Tejpur, Kakching district. The programme is being organised in association with the Department of Zoology, Manipur University, Tejpur Popular Club, Pole Star College and the Alliance for Alternative Development, Manipur (ADAM), with support from the Directorate of Environment and Climate Change.
BeeNet Manipur stated that the theme highlights the urgent need for ecosystem-based solutions to address climate change. Expressing concern over the decline of forest cover in Manipur, the organisation noted that factors such as illegal poppy cultivation, timber logging, forest fires, encroachment and unsustainable land-use practices continue to threaten the state’s environment.
The organisation called for stronger conservation measures, including community-based forest management, restoration of degraded hill slopes, enhanced monitoring systems and strict enforcement of environmental laws. It also urged people from all communities to join collective efforts to protect nature and secure a sustainable future.
