The All Manipur Students’ Guardians’ Organization (AMSGO) celebrated its 26th Foundation Day today at Singjamei Waikhom Leikai, Imphal West. The event, themed “Root of Unfair Means Practices During Exams,” aimed to address the rising issue of academic dishonesty and its impact on the education system.
Prominent dignitaries who attended the occasion included Assistant Professor Rajesh Yumnam, AMSGO Working President N. Chaoba, President S. Shyama, Chingamakha Apunba Nupi Lup President Borbabu, and AMSGO Treasurer.
In her keynote address, AMSGO General Secretary Sumati Sougrakpam emphasized the need to identify and eliminate the root causes of unfair practices in examinations. She questioned how cheating had become so widespread in the past 4-5 years, despite efforts to maintain academic integrity.
“The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted education, and many students developed the habit of relying on unfair means. However, this is not an excuse. The growing culture of exam malpractice must be addressed immediately,” she stated.
She further expressed concern over students resorting to cheating due to lack of preparation, a practice that continues into higher education. Many parents, knowingly or unknowingly, contribute to this problem by pressuring teachers or seeking special treatment for their children. The failure of some educators and invigilators to strictly enforce examination rules has also worsened the situation.
The AMSGO General Secretary urged private and government schools to ensure strict monitoring to curb malpractices. She also called on parents to actively participate in their children’s education rather than focusing solely on securing good marks by any means.
Highlighting that cheating distorts the education system and diminishes the value of learning, she stressed the urgent need for reforms to restore discipline and academic integrity.
AMSGO appealed to all stakeholders—parents, teachers, school authorities, and the government—to work together to uphold examination ethics. She further emphasized that proper guidance for students and strict adherence to invigilation norms are essential to ensuring fair and transparent exams.
As part of the 26th-anniversary celebration, AMSGO organized special programs at six different locations, engaging over 200 volunteers. The event concluded with a collective pledge to strengthen the education system and foster ethical learning practices in Manipur.
