Imphal, Dec 12:
The All Manipur Nupi Marup commemorated the 85th Nupilal Ningsing Thouram at Irawat Bhawan, Roopmahal Tank. The event was presided over by Manipur State Council Communist Party of India State Secretary L. Thoiren, All Manipur Nupi Marup President M. Sakhi, and Vice President Th. Puinabati Devi, who served as presidium members.
In her keynote address, All Manipur Nupi Marup Secretary L. Sumatibala highlighted the significance of remembering the sacrifices made during the Nupi Lal. She emphasized that the program was organized to honor the courage and determination of the women who participated in the movement, particularly in the context of the challenges facing society today.
Sumatibala drew parallels between the colonial oppression during the Nupi Lal era and the current hardships faced by the people of Manipur. She spoke about the prevalence of fake encounters and the ongoing struggles faced by the common people, including house burnings, displacement of families, loss of livelihoods, and brutal attacks on women and children. She noted that these incidents reflect a systematic failure of governance, threatening the state’s social fabric.
She further stated that although India is a democracy where elections are held every five years, the aspirations of the people remain unmet. This failure of governance has left citizens in a state of despair, she added. The prevailing conditions in Manipur, marked by unrest and insecurity, demand urgent action to restore peace and justice.
Sumatibala also expressed concern over the re-imposition of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) in six districts, including areas under the jurisdiction of the Tamenglong police station. She warned that such measures could further oppress and alienate the people, exacerbating their hardships.
