The 22nd Shumang Leela Ningtham Kumhei Festival was inaugurated today at the Iboyaima Shumang Leela Shanglen, marking the commencement of the annual celebration of Shumang Leela, a traditional form of Meitei theatre.
The festival, organized by the Manipur State Shumang Leela Council, brings together male and female Shumang Leela troupes from across the state to showcase their performances. The event was presided over by H. Gyan Prakash, Commissioner of the Department of Arts and Culture, and P. Bilash, Director of the Jawaharlal Nehru Manipur Dance Academy, who attended as the chief guests and festival presidents.
As part of the inauguration, the Poklen Pokpa Artistes Association presented the play titled “Eina Helli Nungshiba”, which was well received by the audience.
During the opening ceremony, Commissioner H. Gyan Prakash highlighted the significance of Shumang Leela in promoting cultural values and preserving the traditional performing arts of Manipur.
The festival is expected to run for several days, featuring performances from various Shumang Leela troupes, celebrating the rich heritage and storytelling traditions of the state.
