Imphal, April 6:
The Zeliangrong United Committee, Manipur (ZUCM) has strongly condemned the April 5 armed assault allegedly carried out by Kuki militants on two village leaders from Konsakhul village in Kangpokpi district, warning that such repeated incidents could lead to a wider ethnic conflict in the state.
Speaking to media persons, ZUCM President Maibon Phaomei condemned the attack in which Konsakhul Village Chief Aimson Abonmei (55) and Village Chairman D. Adam (45) were brutally assaulted. Both victims are currently undergoing treatment at RIMS Hospital, Imphal, and are said to be in critical condition.
Maibon Phaomei asserted that it is unjust for migrants to forcibly occupy land and later claim it as their own. “This is not only false but also a serious provocation,” he said. He added that if such armed aggression continues, it may spark a broader communal conflict between the indigenous communities and the Kuki population.
Referring to the incident as a “deliberate and dangerous provocation,” he urged the Governor of Manipur and the Chief Secretary to take immediate and decisive action. “It is alarming that cadres under Suspension of Operations (SoO) agreements are reportedly involved in such violent acts,” he added, demanding that the state government identify and take strict action against those responsible.
The ZUCM president cautioned that the continued targeting of traditional village institutions and leaders could lead to irreparable damage to Manipur’s social harmony. He stressed the importance of preserving the unity of Manipur and called upon all indigenous communities to stand together in the face of aggression.
ZUCM reiterated its commitment to safeguarding the interests and ancestral lands of indigenous groups and warned that any further inaction could result in a stronger and unavoidable response. “If such attacks are not stopped, there will be consequences that may escalate beyond control,” Maibon Phaomei stated.
The committee called on the public to remain vigilant and united, and urged the authorities to ensure the safety and integrity of all indigenous communities in Manipur.
