Zeliangrong United Front raises concerns over NSCN-IM’s forced taxation, extortion practices

The Zeliangrong United Front (ZUF) has released a statement, highlighting its concerns over the alleged aggressive taxation and extortion activities by NSCN-IM. The activities, the statement suggests, have adversely impacted the business community and citizens at large.
ZUF’s statement asserts, “NSCN-IM’s consistent unwarranted taxation and extortion are undermining both our business sectors and the general public. The public has reached a breaking point, urging the Front to step in and safeguard their interests.”
The organization further elucidated on the deteriorating societal values, “Basic human principles and social morality have been overshadowed by a prevalent culture of violence and crime. Local authorities and residents often find themselves providing refuge to NSCN-IM, typically due to fear or outright threats. In particular, the Zeliangrong regions, including areas around NH-37 and the NF railway, have faced the brunt of NSCN-IM’s aggressive activities. Such tactics seem localized as their approach differs elsewhere in Nagaland.”
ZUF continued, expressing concern over the treatment of the Zeliangrong tribes, “Our community faces the oppressive hand of NSCN-IM, leading to significant exploitation of public assets and rights. Authorities and residents near the NH-37 and NF Railway are advised against harboring the NSCN-IM. Those ignoring this advisory might be held accountable for any resulting unfavorable incidents tied to NSCN-IM’s ongoing forceful taxation, extortion, and intimidation.”
In a stern warning, the Front added, “Despite multiple advisories issued to the NSCN-IM to avoid Zeliangrong territories, the Front will not hesitate in taking decisive action against any infringements, even if it results in public damages or property loss. Community Service Organizations (CSOs) in the region are in sync with our stance, evident from the declaration made on July 31, 2023, following the release of three NSCN-IM members by CSO leaders.”
The Front, in their conclusion, urged the general public, “This advisory seeks the attention of every concerned citizen and local authority. The Front is committed to ensuring peace and security by eliminating threats. We appeal for public support in our mission to restore harmony and cleanse society of detrimental elements.”
