An unidentified youth was shot dead by unknown persons at Angom Leikai Laijing Ching Mayai Lampak under Lamlai Police Station in Imphal East district around 12.15 am today.
According to police, the deceased sustained four bullet injuries to the head. Police and a Forensic Science Laboratory team examined the scene before the body was taken to the mortuary of the Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS) for identification and post-mortem examination.
Three live 9mm rounds and one empty cartridge case were recovered from the scene, police said.
The deceased has been identified as Waikhom Athoi@ Shidaba s/o W. Shital & Pramodini of Khabam Mayai Leikai. At the time of the incident, he was wearing a dark T-shirt, dark blue half-pants and slippers. A tattoo was also found on his left arm, which may assist in establishing his identity.
People residing in the vicinity reportedly heard sounds resembling gunshots around midnight.
