YFPHR condemns alleged enforced disappearances of Kamalbabu

Imphal, Dec 6:

The Youth’s Forum for Protection of Human Rights (YFPHR) has expressed deep concern over alleged instances of enforced disappearances by the Central Armed Forces, particularly the Assam Rifles, following the reimposition of the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA), 1958, in six police station jurisdictions. In a recent statement, the forum alleged that such incidents perpetuate fear and violate human rights in the Northeast.
YFPHR specifically highlighted the disappearance of Laishram Kamalbabu, a contract worker at the Leimakhong Army Camp under the 57 Mountain Division, which is a high-security military zone. The forum described his disappearance as “highly suspicious and questionable,” demanding accountability from the Ministry of Defense. They called for a thorough investigation into the incident and stringent action against those responsible, condemning it as a continuation of cruelty and inhumane practices by the armed forces.
The forum also pointed to a long history of alleged human rights violations in the region under the shadow of AFSPA, including extrajudicial killings, sexual violence, and over 24 cases of enforced disappearances. They criticized the lack of justice, stating that no perpetrators have been prosecuted, and no prosecution sanctions have been granted against Indian armed forces personnel involved in such cases.
YFPHR strongly condemned the militarization of Manipur, accusing both the central and state governments of enabling mass deployment of armed forces under the pretext of curbing violence since May 3, 2023. The forum argued that such actions have created a climate of fear and insecurity among civilians.
