YFPHR appeals to end poll related violence in Manipur

Youth’s Forum for Protection of Human Rights (YFPHR) expressed serious concern about the General Election-related violence which are taking place for the last few months in different parts of Manipur.
A statement by the forum said that the violence related to the election could be observed since the mid of 2020 in the Andro Assembly constituency and still prevailing to date which resulted in the destruction of houses and injuring many innocent people. The same could be observed in Heirok, Khangabok, and Yairipok of Thoubal District wherein houses were destroyed, civilians were physically assaulted, media persons were assaulted, gunfight and various others it added.
“Such an act being committed by those who claimed to be the supporters of different candidates of different area are not able to be booked and arrested according to the rule of law by the Government of Manipur knowing the fact that civilians are the victims and need protection”, the statement by YFPHR said.
It added that any actors insisting on the violence are in need to be held accountable and punished according to the rule of law.
“As we cannot deny the fact that the state is responsible to protect the rights of its civilians who are victimized in such violence. However, it is truly a shame of the Government of Manipur to put an end to the violence which is being occurred in the state of Manipur”, the statement said.
The YFPHR appealed to the Government of Manipur, Governor of Manipur, Manipur Human Rights Commission, and the Department of Home to urgently intervene in the matter and direct the intending candidates of various constituencies to immediately stop escalating the violence and stop harassing and injuring the civilians and respect the rule of law.
The YFPHR also appealed to the general public to refrain from indulging in the violence and not to get carried away with violence mongering and insisting on people just for mere benefits.
