World Soil Day observed

The World Soil Day under the theme “Keep soil alive; protect soil biodiversity” was celebrated at the Conference Hall of Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Chandel today.

The programme was graced by Mayanglambam Rajkumar, IAS, Deputy Commissioner, Chandel as the Chief Guest and  Ts. Gladney Monsang, District Agricultural Officer, Chandel as the Guest of Honour. Dr. K. Sonamani Singh, SMS (SWCE), KVK, Chandel in his keynote address put into words the importance of World Soil Day celebration annually. He stressed the need for the farmers of the district to inculcate good farming practices for keeping the soil healthy. He urged the farmers to practice mulching and crop rotation in their fields. 

In his speech,  Mayanglambam Rajkumar emphasised the need for maintaining soil fertility through organic means and to avoid non-judicious use of chemical fertilisers in the fields. He expressed hope that the farmers of the district will understand the importance of Soil Health Cards for assessing the existing health status of their fields and also hoped that they will strive towards overall development of the district through sincere and dedicated approach in farming. Mrs. Ts. Gladney Monsang stressed the need for getting soil tested by the farmers and to consult the experts in concerned departments to make necessary soil amendments in a healthy and sustainable manner. Thereafter the programme, a live webcasting of inauguration program of Directors Conference Chaired by Narendra Singh Tomar, Union Minister of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare was telecast and attended by staff of KVK Chandel and the farmers.

In the function, 58 progressive farmers participated enthusiastically and 49 SHCs were distributed alongwith seeds of cabbage, coriander, carrot, garden pea and also vermicompost manure.
