The Department of Library and Information Science and Central Library at Manipur University organized the observance of World Book and Copyright Day 2024 today, under the theme “Read Your Way.” The event saw the participation of esteemed guests, scholars, and book enthusiasts.
Dr. K. Sangeeta Devi, Assistant Professor of the Department of Library & Information Science, Manipur University, delivered the welcome speech. Salam Rupachandra Singh, the Invited Speaker, provided valuable insights into the importance of copyright protection in the digital age. Prof. Th. Purnima Devi, the Special Guest, emphasized the significance of promoting a culture of reading in society.
The Chief Guest, Prof. N. Rajmuhon Singh, delivered an inspiring address, highlighting the value of books as repositories of knowledge and culture. Prof. Ch. Ibohal Singh, University Librarian (i/c), Manipur University, expressed gratitude on behalf of the university and extended a vote of thanks to all participants and organizers. He emphasized that technology is not antithetical to library culture, noting Manipur University’s progress in digitization efforts. “A reading nation is a leading nation,” as Karl Marx put it,” he added. “We should develop connections between people and the library.”
The release of Manipur University Library Publications, including the Index to Periodicals Subscribed 2023-24 and Manipur University Library Annual Additions 2023-24, was met with great enthusiasm. The releases were uploaded on the university website for wider access and dissemination of knowledge.
World Book and Copyright Day, celebrated annually on April 23rd, is a UNESCO-declared event aimed at promoting reading, publishing, and protecting intellectual property through copyright laws. It serves as an opportunity to celebrate books as essential tools for education, cultural exchange, and overall human development. Additionally, it highlights the importance of respecting authors’ rights and the value of creative expression in all its forms. This day also coincides with the death anniversaries of renowned authors such as William Shakespeare and Miguel de Cervantes, making it a fitting occasion to honor their contributions to literature.
