The All Manipur Working Journalists’ Union (AMWJU) observed International Women’s Day at the Manipur Press Club yesterday under the theme “Give to Gain.”
During the programme, women working in different media houses in various capacities were honoured with gifts in recognition of their contributions to the media sector.
Speaking as a presidium member, Khumanthem Daina, Director of the Transport Department, stated that meaningful empowerment of women requires mutual support among women themselves. She noted that while the status of women has improved considerably compared to the past, significant challenges still remain and continued efforts are necessary to address them.
Daina also remarked that when a woman is found involved in any wrongdoing, society should offer constructive criticism rather than simply condemning her.
Yengkhom Victoria, Assistant Director of the Manipur Police Training College, who also attended the event, spoke on the role of the media in addressing social issues affecting women. She appreciated the contributions of women journalists and underlined the importance of financial independence for women.
She stated that every woman, regardless of whether she is employed or not, faces various challenges, and those in better positions should extend support to women living in difficult circumstances.
AMWJU Vice President Sonia Sorensangbam said that the number of women working in media organisations has been steadily increasing over the years. She noted that the presence of women in media was once very limited, but their participation has gradually grown. According to AMWJU records, around 60 out of 450 members are women, indicating gradual progress though further improvement is still required.
The programme was also attended by Manju Adhikarimayum, a member of Representative Woman Impact.
