The World Meetei Council, representing the Meeteis in India and Meetei diaspora around the world, has expressed deep concerns about a press release issued by UN Special Rapporteurs regarding the Manipur crisis on September 4, 2023, under the titled “India: UN experts alarmed by continuing abuses in Manipur”.
“The UN press release lacks balance and impartiality, potentially perpetuating a divisive narrative”, a statement Yambem Arun Meetei, Secretary General, CEC – World Meetei Council said.
The statement said that to deal with the issue the WMC had launched a worldwide signature campaign October 25 at 7: 30 pm IST joined by Manipuris from America, Asia, Australia, Europe and India.
“We earnestly appeal our people around the world to sign “An Appeal to Review and Rectify UN PR on Manipur issue to Ensure Impartiality and Inclusivity”; (Link: https://chng.it/T6bgrDD7DT) so that The united Nations should take the necessary recourse.
A submission WMC to the United Nations disputes several points mentioned on the UN press release, including the portrayal of the conflict as religious, gender based, incited by hate speech and Kuki community as ethnic minority and the victim, in our submission to the United Nations.
It addresses the real complex dynamics of the conflict and the fact that Meetei is the indigenous and endangered community in India. The grave consequences of committing ethnic cleansing of Meeteis in Kuki dominated districts on 3rd of May, 2023.
WMC’s submission exposes the primary cause of the issue as alleged illicit plans, actions, and aggression associated with Chin Kuki terrorist groups, their political leaders and militant
factions operating under Suspension of Operations (SoO), all motivated by one common deadly dream of a separate nation “Zalengam or Zoland”.
The World Meetei Council requests a re-evaluation and revision of the UN press release to
ensure a more balanced and comprehensive understanding of the issue. We emphasize the importance of the United Nations’ credibility as a neutral and objective international organization.
