Weeklong celebration of 71st Wildlife Week concludes in Chandel District

The weeklong celebration of the 71st Wildlife Week concluded today with a district-level programme organised by the Office of the District Forest Officer (DFO), Chandel, at St. Paul Higher Secondary School, Liwa Changning. The concluding event witnessed enthusiastic participation from various schools across the district, with around 1,500 students taking part.
The event was graced by Dr. N. Munal Meitei, DFO Chandel, and the school’s Vice Principal, Albert Kom, as the main guests.
Addressing the gathering, Dr. N. Munal Meitei said that while the district is celebrating Wildlife Week with great zeal, it is unfortunate that human interference has led to a drastic decline in wildlife populations over the years. He remarked that human beings once coexisted harmoniously with forests and wild animals, but unchecked greed and exploitation have resulted in the extinction of over 70 species, with many more now facing the same threat. He called upon students and the younger generation to take active roles in protecting and conserving the remaining wildlife species.
Highlighting the rich biodiversity of Chandel, Dr. Munal noted that the district is endowed with abundant natural resources and scenic landscapes. However, these valuable ecosystems are depleting rapidly. He urged collective efforts to safeguard wildlife and preserve ecological balance for future generations.
As part of the weeklong observance, an awareness programme was also held at Khengjoi village under Khengoi Sub-Division, involving local students, villagers, Assam Rifles personnel, and forest officials.
