Wa-Bamboo exhibition underway on eve of world bamboo day

Three day Wa-Bamboo Exhibition organised in connection with the World Bamboo Day 2022 is underway at the premises of the Gandhi Memorial Hall in the heart of Imphal town. World Bamboo Day 2022 will be celebrated across the state on Sunday (Sept 18).
The Wa-Bamboo Exhibition which has a limited number of stalls was inaugurated by Assistant Mission Director N Somorendro of National Bamboo Mission Manipur.
The World Bamboo Organization’s former President Kamesh Salam and Bamboo Forum of India’s Coordinator Sukumar Haobam were also present during the formal inauguration in Imphal on Friday.
The Bamboo Development Promotion Organisation and Bamboo Forum of India will be organising the World bamboo Day 2022 at the Gandhi memorial hall in Imphal while Manipur state bamboo mission,Institute of Bioresources and sustainable development(IBSD),North East centre for technology application and Reach and South Asia bamboo foundation will be organising the event at IBSD premises in the outskirts of Imphal tomorrow.
India which is the second largest producer of bamboo in the world, continues to import huge amount of incense sticks (made out of bamboos) from Vietnam and China due to lack of knowledge on commercial cultivation of bamboo species (to substitute wood in mitigating pressure on natural forests).India reportedly consumes 3 billion incense sticks daily.
Only about 10 bamboo species including Saneibi,Khok,Watang,Maribob species out of 55 bamboo species found in Manipur(86 species in North East) are suitable for housing purposes even though other species are fit for walling etc. North Eastern states contribute 54 percent of India’s bamboo production.
