Imphal, Nov 21:
Social media vlogger RK Ichanthoi was detained by Manipur police moments after addressing the media at the Manipur Press Club. Ichanthoi who expressed her dissatisfaction with the state’s handling of the ongoing crisis, was reportedly speaking on behalf of a group of independent students.
According to Ichanthoi, the group, unaffiliated with any student organization, had attempted to raise concerns over the worsening situation in Manipur. However, citing restrictions under IT laws, they were unable to post their grievances on social media platforms. She emphasized that, as citizens, they had the right to voice their discontent, even without formal organizational backing.
Ichanthoi alleged that law enforcement officials dismissed the students’ efforts on the grounds that they were not part of an established student group. Similarly, she claimed she was prohibited from addressing the media for the same reason. “Do citizens not have the right to raise their voices?” she questioned.
In her statement, Ichanthoi appealed to both the ruling BJP government and opposition Congress MLAs to collaborate on resolving the prolonged crisis, which has claimed numerous innocent lives, including women and children. She also called on civil society organizations to unite for the common goal of protecting the state and its people.
