As a part of the world fortnight observation protesting against crimes on women, Women Action for Development (WAD), today pulled up one of the unsolved and unattended criminal cases of the state; the brutal killing of 10 years old, Samjetsabam Ichal/Thambaltombi of Andro Awang Leikai on Dec 17, 2006.
Under the initiative of WAD’s Secretary, Sobita Mangsatabam along with a team of media personnel today visited the victims’ family of Ichal at Andro Awang Leikai.
Samjetsabam Ichal was the youngest daughter of four siblings of S. Munal Singh and S. (o) Amubi Devi of Andro Awang Leikai under Yairipok Police station in Thoubal district. Ichal used to help her parents in collecting firewood and wild vegetables from Nongmaiching hill. Ichal was the only daughter of the family who was pursuing education. As a part of tradition followed by the people of Andro, everyone used to go and collect firewood and wild vegetables from the hills. Ichal along with her friends had left home on the early morning of Dec 17, 2006 to collect firewood from Thoubongoubi of Nongmaiching hill. Till 08 am she did not return home. Family members believed that she might have been lured away by some evil spirits. They used drums and cymbals and went out searching for her. At around 07.00 pm her dead body was found lying at Changathenbi Chakphu Uppi Laipham. There were knife wounds on her neck, calf and thigh as well as injuries on her private parts.
Speaking to media, mother of Ichal, S. (o) Amubi said justice has been delayed since their family is poor. She said the culprits and whoever involved in the killing of her daughter should be punished the same way she was killed.
According to Yairipok Police station in Thoubal district an FIR bearing number 117 (12) 2006 was registered under IPC section 376, 302, 349.
