Tensions escalated in Kangpokpi district after the vandalism of monoliths and public property in Ireng Naga village, prompting residents to block the Ireng road for the second consecutive day on Tuesday.
According to reports, the incident occurred on Sunday night when miscreants allegedly affiliated with the Suspension of Operations (SoO) group, Kuki National Front–President (KNF-P), dismantled the village’s entry gate and defaced a memorial stone by writing slogans such as “Kukiland” and “Stay Away.” A vehicle waiting shed at the gate, along with chairs kept there, was also damaged.
Residents of Ireng Naga village protested the act by blocking the road from around 10 am on Monday, disrupting traffic along the route. The indefinite blockade left several passenger vehicles stranded on the so-called Tiger Road, also known as the German Road, which connects Churachandpur to Kangpokpi.
The German Road has been a source of controversy, as its construction was reportedly initiated by Kuki groups without proper government approval, leading to ethnic tensions with Naga communities who claim the road encroaches on their ancestral lands. The route has also been linked to unauthorised settlements and illegal activities, prompting the National Green Tribunal to order a halt to construction due to the absence of environmental clearance.
Local authorities have called for restraint and dialogue to prevent further escalation, while investigations are underway to identify those responsible for the vandalism.
