Imphal, Aug. 16:

Expressing strong exception to the vandalizing and burning of the police post at Chandel and the confrontation between the Naga people and the Manipur Police on August 14, Congress MLA K. Meghachandra today said that such action is a direct insult to the morals of the Home department and the Manipur Police.
Terming the act of vandalism by supporters of the United Naga Council as unfortunate, the Vice president of the Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC), who represents Wangkhem Assembly Constituency said that despite claims by the state government the state police is not effectively discharging their duty at Hill districts of Manipur.
Speaking to reporters at the sideline of a function held at Charangpat in Thoubal district today, MLA Meghachandra said, “Burning of police properties in front of police and police remain ineffective to control such mob act is most unfortunate”.
Most time the state government claims to have been deploying state police for maintenance of law and order however in reality there are reports of police inability to control the activities of various underground groups and other illegal activities is a sign of non-existence of police force in the Hill area, Meghachandra added. The Congress MLA said that the incident at Chandel showed that people traveling on the National Highways are insecure and media reports of anti-social element collecting illegal taxes from the commuters at Mao gate and Noney where there is no adequate security seems to be true.
“It also showed that the government has not taken up adequate measures to protect the lives of the common people in hill region”, Meghachandra said.
