Senior citizens from the Uripok area in Imphal have submitted memoranda to the Governor of Manipur and the President of India, raising a series of demands in connection with the ongoing crisis in the state.
The memorandum was endorsed by senior citizens who participated in a sit-in protest organised by the Uripok Apunba Lup and the Uripok Nupi Apunba Lup on April 19 at Uripok Canteen corner.
In the representation, the signatories placed six key demands before the authorities. They urged that the National Register of Citizens (NRC) be updated in Manipur at the earliest, prior to the conduct of the Census. They also called for immediate action to identify and arrest those involved in the killing of civilians since May 3, 2023, and to ensure time-bound legal proceedings against the accused.
The memorandum further sought measures to curb deforestation in affected districts and pressed for expedited investigation and filing of charge sheets in cases related to narcotics crimes. It also called for the removal of camps of Kuki militants operating under the Suspension of Operations (SoO) agreement with the Centre and the state government.
Additionally, the senior citizens urged deployment of state security forces, including Manipur Police, Manipur Rifles and the Indian Reserve Battalion, in sensitive Meitei villages located near Kuki-inhabited areas. They also demanded adequate security arrangements to ensure safe movement of Meitei civilians along National Highways, as well as protection for members of the Tangkhul community travelling along the Imphal–Ukhrul road.
