The United Protection Committee (UPC) Nambol has cautioned that the State Government must fully exercise its authority to control the ongoing crisis in Manipur, failing which it should step aside and allow the people to take charge. The warning was issued during a press meet held at the committee’s office in Nambol today.
Addressing media persons, Khomdram Sunil, Co-Convenor of Media and Research, UPC Nambol, stated that despite the presence of several state-level civil society organisations (CSOs), the situation has not improved, raising concerns over lack of coordinated action. He called for unity and collective efforts among CSOs to address the worsening ground realities.
Khomdram Sunil alleged that since May 3, 2023, Kuki narco-terrorist groups have been carrying out activities aimed at destabilising Manipur, while the State Government has failed to deliver an effective response. He referred to a series of violent incidents, including the killing of two children in a bomb blast on April 7, followed by protests near a CRPF outpost where three persons were reportedly killed in firing. He also cited an ambush at TM Kashom on April 18 that resulted in the deaths of two individuals. He stated that justice remains elusive in all these cases.
Demanding accountability and justice for the victims, the UPC Nambol announced that it will organise a public rally on May 3. The rally will begin from Nambol Sabal Leikai and proceed towards Kondompokpi Lamkhai.
The committee has appealed to residents of Nambol, Oinam, Konthoujam, Wangoi and Naoriya to take part in the rally. Local clubs and Meira Paibi organisations have been requested to ensure participation, with at least two members from each household. The UPC also sought public support in the form of transport, financial assistance and other necessary materials to ensure the success of the rally.
