University students agitate against the notice to vacate hostel

Reacting strongly against the notice to vacate the Boys’ and Girls’ Hostel of Manipur University, the students of the university agitated today inside the campus of the University.Large number of students closed the main gate of the University since morning at around 10 am and did not allow anyone to enter the campus. However, the gate was re-opened by a team of police after firing tear gas shells and smoke bombs. Two students of the University hurt in police action. They have been identified as Chingakham Lalita (23), d/o Polo of Andro Khunou Leikai, a 3rd Semester student of Linguisatics Department and Yengkhom Bandana (23) d/o Shantikumar of Kakching Khunyai Leikai, a 3rd Semester student of English Department.After some time, the students against stormed at the office of the Dean and Administrative Block of the University.The students shouted slogans against the VC of the University in front of the gate of A Block and demanded him to clarify the reason why authority of the University ordered to vacate the hostels.It may be mentioned here that Prof N. Lokendra, Registrar of Manipur University ordered to vacate the Boys’ and Girls’ Hostel of the University from 4 pm of 6th August 2014 until there is a further order. It may also be mentioned that a large number of students belonging to OBC and Scheduled Caste protested against the amendment of reservation policy for scheduled caste and OBC students in the University.
