UMPC Manipur demands action against MLAs over ‘Indigenous Pillar’ controversy

The United Meitei-Pangal Committee (UMPC), Manipur has demanded immediate government intervention and accountability following allegations that certain MLAs had extended support, including financial assistance, to the Federation of Haomee (FoH) for erecting the controversial “Indigenous Pillar” at Sawombung, Imphal East.
In a statement issued today, UMPC Manipur urged the state government to suspend and initiate an inquiry against any legislators found involved in the issue, to remove or modify the divisive monument, and to register an FIR against the FoH for spreading communal misinformation. The organisation also called for a State-level Peace and Reconciliation Dialogue to restore unity and understanding among all communities in Manipur.
The committee asserted that the “Indigenous Pillar” deliberately excludes the Meitei-Pangal (Muslim) community from Manipur’s indigenous identity narrative, calling it a violation of constitutional equality and an affront to the state’s inclusive history.
UMPC recalled that it had earlier submitted a memorandum to the Governor of Manipur, urging an inquiry into the matter, and had also lodged a formal FIR request with the DGP against FoH’s alleged communal and defamatory actions. The organisation said the revelation of MLAs’ alleged involvement represents a serious breach of public trust, undermining secular democratic values and endangering communal harmony in the state.
The statement, signed by Md. Jiaul Haque, Secretary (IPR), UMPC Manipur, reaffirmed the committee’s commitment to peace, justice, and inclusivity, while appealing to citizens, civil society organisations, and community leaders to stand together for a united and harmonious Manipur.
