On the occasion of the 45th ‘Foundation Day’ of the United Liberation Front of Asom [Independent] (ULFA –I), General Paresh Asom conveyed greetings to the public in a statement released today.
“As we commemorate the 7th of April, let us honor the spirit of Gomdhar Konwar, who bravely resisted the subjugation by the English East India Company and refused to surrender the independent kingdom of Asom. His resilience, alongside others of his time, inspired the refounding of the United Liberation Front of Asom on this day in 1979,” stated General Asom.
General Asom highlighted historical grievances, citing instances where Asom’s sovereignty was compromised and the region’s people were subjected to military brutalities. He emphasized ULFA[I]’s commitment to their cause and asserted that they are not terrorists, but rather defenders of their rights as enshrined in international law.
Acknowledging the sacrifices made by martyrs since 1826, General Asom reiterated the organization’s determination to restore sovereignty to Asom within the framework of meaningful dialogue with India.
He criticized Indian policies and the exploitation of the region’s resources, advocating for regional independence as the only solution to prevent colonial rule and exploitation. General Asom urged Indians to recognize the inevitability of regional independence and called for an end to oppressive practices against ULFA[I] members and supporters.
Closing his address, General Asom extended greetings for the upcoming Bihu festival and Tholgiri’s New Year, emphasizing the celebration of life, unity, and joy synonymous with the hearts of the Tholgiri’s people and ULFA[I].
