Two held with 530 grams of suspected brown sugar in Senapati

In a major anti-narcotics operation, a combined team of Senapati Police and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel seized 42 soap cases containing 530 grams of suspected brown sugar and arrested two persons during a frisking and checking operation at T-Khullen Naka Checkpoint in Senapati district on today morning.

According to police, the operation was conducted at around 8 am by a joint team comprising the Special Operation Team (SOT) of Senapati Police, personnel from the Women Police Station, Senapati, D/78 Battalion CRPF and the Quick Action Team (QAT) of B/109 Battalion CRPF.

During the checking, the team intercepted a Tata Yodha vehicle bearing registration number MN06LA-3305. A thorough search of the vehicle led to the recovery of 42 soap cases containing suspected brown sugar weighing 530 grams, including the plastic wrappers but excluding the soap case covers.

The occupants of the vehicle were identified as Helkho Kipgen (45), son of Paolal Kipgen of Keithelmanbi village in Kangpokpi district, and Hatneilhing Kipgen (40), wife of Tongsei Kipgen of Hengbung village in Kangpokpi district. Both were arrested after observing the required legal formalities.

Besides the suspected contraband, the police also seized the Tata Yodha vehicle used for transportation, a green-coloured sack, two mobile phones, an Aadhaar card, a ladies’ purse and cash amounting to Rs. 5,000.

The arrested individuals, along with the seized contraband and other articles, were handed over to Senapati Police Station for registration of a case and further legal action under the relevant provisions of law.

Police said further investigation is underway to ascertain the source and intended destination of the suspected narcotic substance and to identify others, if any, involved in the alleged drug trafficking network.
