The movement of goods-laden trucks into Manipur resumed today under police escort after hundreds of vehicles remained stranded for several days along the Assam–Manipur border due to security concerns.
The stranded trucks, carrying food grains, medicines, fuel and other essential commodities, had caused a major disruption in the supply chain to the state.
Truck drivers and helpers alleged that they were left without adequate food, safe drinking water and medical assistance during the prolonged halt. Some claimed they had to depend on nearby hill streams for water, while transporters reported financial losses as perishable goods deteriorated and deliveries were delayed.
Drivers appealed to the authorities to ensure uninterrupted movement of vehicles and provide emergency support, including food, drinking water and medical facilities, during such disruptions.
Authorities on Monday began clearing the backlog by allowing trucks to proceed towards Manipur in police-escorted convoys to ensure safe passage and prevent any untoward incidents.
The resumption of convoy movement is expected to ease pressure on the state’s supply of essential commodities, although transporters stressed the need for lasting measures to prevent similar disruptions in the future.
