The historic Kakching Machin Manao Ching battlefield, advanced from the Tamu Column during the Anglo-Manipur War of 1891, was remembered as one of the fiercest sites of resistance where Major Meiraba and 20 soldiers laid down their lives.
A tribute programme was held at the site, where people, led by Justice Committee Chairman Joychandra Konthoujam, offered floral tributes and paid homage to both known and unknown forefathers who sacrificed their lives defending the land.
Addressing the gathering, Joychandra Konthoujam said the forefathers had left behind a clear message that while death is inevitable, one must never live in fear or surrender in times of crisis, but instead uphold courage, dignity and sacrifice. He stated that these values must be carried forward by the younger generation as a collective responsibility.
He stressed the need to incorporate battle sites associated with Column 3 of the Anglo-Manipur War into school and college curricula, stating that such inclusion would strengthen historical awareness and deepen attachment to the motherland. He observed that Manipur has endured through the sacrifices of its forefathers and that understanding this legacy remains crucial today.
Recounting historical events, he said British interference in Manipur’s administration led to the outbreak of war at Kangla after attempts were made to undermine the kingdom’s independence. Despite facing a far stronger force, Manipuri warriors resisted fiercely, killing several British officers before continued offensives turned the tide.
He noted that the struggle reached a turning point on April 27, 1891, when the Union Jack was hoisted at Kangla, marking the loss of sovereignty. However, he said the forefathers continued to fight with resolve, making immense sacrifices across multiple battlefields.
Calling for unity, Joychandra Konthoujam urged all communities to uphold the ideals of the forefathers, work collectively to safeguard Manipur’s integrity, and strive towards building a peaceful and stable future.
