Floral tribute was paid to Thangjam Manorama – the lady victim of the Armed Forces Special Power Act, which gave a wake-up call to the people of the state against the draconian Act.
The 32-year-old woman from Manipur, India was killed by the Indian paramilitary unit, 17th Assam Rifles on 11 July 2004.
The bullet-ridden and badly mutilated dead body of 32 years old Thangjam Manorama was found abandoned three kilometers away from her home at Bamon Kampu on July 11 of 2004. she was arrested the earlier night. She was shot several times. Investigations revealed that she was tortured and raped before being killed but there was the involvement of Assam Rifles. Following the killing mass movement demanding repeal of AFSPA and punishment of the Security personnel haunted the state for many months.
The Working Committee of the Apunba Lup, a civil society body, Thangjam Manorama Charitable Trust, Bamon Kampu observed every July 11 by paying floral tribute and voicing for repeal of the AFSPA every year.
This year is the 17th memorial day but observed only a few people at Bamon Kampu due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
