Tribute paid to 1891 war martyrs at Khongjom

A commemorative programme in honour of the martyrs, freedom fighters and unsung heroes of the Anglo-Manipur War was held at Khongjom on Saturday.
The event, organised by the Justice Committee on Anglo Manipur War-1891 Martyrs and Freedom Fighters of Kangleipak (Manipur) in association with FPMC Khongjom Bazar, took place at Tengol Laikai Community Hall.
The programme included floral tributes, a silent condolence, addresses by dignitaries and distribution of awards to journalists and intellectual contributors. Dr. Thangjam Dhabali, Chairman and Managing Director of Babina Group, attended as chief guest, while Joychandra Konthoujam presided over the function.
The observance was held to honour the sacrifices made during the 1891 war and to recognise individuals contributing to public discourse and journalism.
Khongjom, particularly Tengol Lampak—where the Tamu column advanced during the historic battle—remains a significant site of resistance. Organisers stated that the programme aimed to remind the present generation of the values upheld by the forefathers and the responsibility to preserve and carry forward those ideals.
Speaking on the occasion, Joychandra Konthoujam raised concerns over the prevailing situation in Manipur, stating that issues relating to the protection of indigenous communities require attention. He cautioned that policies perceived as divisive could weaken unity and lead to further instability.
He further noted that Manipur has made significant contributions to the country and stressed the need for addressing ongoing challenges facing the state.
Regarding the awards, he stated that journalists were recognised for their continued efforts in reporting under challenging circumstances and informing the public, while social activists were honoured for their work in addressing public issues and helping citizens access their rights and entitlements.
The programme reflects continued efforts by civil society organisations to commemorate historical events while engaging with contemporary concerns affecting the state.
