Several tribal bodies in Manipur have strongly condemned the alleged harassment of Dr. Larung Mejonah, a member of the Maring tribe, by police personnel at Konung Mamang in Imphal on Friday night. The incident, which occurred around 9 PM, has sparked outrage among various student and medical organizations.
According to reports, Dr. Mejonah was stopped by six or seven groups of Manipur Police at Palace Compound on Friday evening and asked for vehicle documents, which he promptly provided. However, things took a disturbing turn when Dr. Mejonah identified himself as a doctor and stated that he was currently posted at Moreh Hospital as a Medical Officer under Manipur Health Services. Allegedly, the police responded with threats, stating, “Then I could even kill you,” before detaining him for an hour.
The All Naga Doctors’ Forum, Manipur, issued a joint release condemning the incident, describing it as “untoward and unprofessional manhandling” and demanding action against the involved personnel. Similarly, the All Tangkhul Medicos Association (ATMA) expressed discontent over the alleged harassment, emphasizing the need for accountability and disciplinary action.
The All Naga Students’ Association, Manipur (ANSAM), criticized the behavior of the Manipur police personnel, denouncing the use of “death threat and xenophobic language.” They called for disciplinary action and emphasized the importance of maintaining peace and harmony in the state.
The Maring Uparap Assembly (MUA) also condemned the incident, particularly highlighting the use of derogatory language by the police personnel. Additionally, the Senapati District Doctor’s Association and All Zeliangrong Medicos Union denounced the incident, calling it inappropriate and unprofessional.
Furthermore, the Naga Students’ Union, Chandel (NSUC), condemned the mishandling of Dr. Mejonah, demanding action against the involved police personnel and emphasizing the need to support doctors working amidst challenging circumstances. NSUC urged the government and relevant authorities to take appropriate action against those responsible for harassing Dr. Mejonah and ensure that such incidents are not repeated in the future.
Dr. Anthony Kashing, representing the Senapati District Doctor’s Association, expressed dismay over the incident, stressing the importance of respecting doctors’ efforts amidst the chaos in the state.
The incident has sparked widespread condemnation and calls for accountability, with various tribal bodies urging the government to take appropriate action against the responsible individuals.
