Imphal, April 3:
Transgender activist Malem Thongam, who has been fasting since February 22, 2024, to demand an end to the ongoing violence in Manipur, has announced plans to escalate her protest. Thongam revealed that she will commence a demonstration outside the official residence of a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) starting April 5, extending her protest until the conclusion of the Lok Sabha Election 2024.
Speaking to media persons at Manipur Press Club, Malem Thongam strongly criticized the apparent neglect of the crisis by Manipur’s MLAs. She accused them of prioritizing election preparations over addressing the pressing issue of violence plaguing the state since May 3 of the previous year.
Malem Thongam emphasized that the state government possesses the capability to swiftly resolve the ongoing violence but lamented their failure to take decisive action, allowing the situation to deteriorate unchecked.
In her appeal for intervention, Malem called upon Prime Minister Narendra Modi to visit Manipur and provide assistance in restoring peace and normalcy. Additionally, she urged the revocation of the Suspension of Operations (SoO) agreement between the Central government, state government, and Kuki groups, viewing it as a crucial step towards resolving the conflict.
Malem’s decision to escalate her protest underscores the urgency of addressing the violence and instability in Manipur, particularly in the lead-up to the Lok Sabha Election.
