Kakching, May 7:
A one-day training programme for farmers on the theme “Sustainable Horticultural Practice for Improved Productivity and Income Generation” was held today at the Conference Hall of Kakching Municipal Council. The event was conducted under the Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana (RKVY) Cafeteria scheme for the year 2023–24 and organised by the District Horticulture and Soil Conservation Office, Thoubal.
Deputy Commissioner of Kakching, Rohit Anand, attended the programme as Chief Guest, Kh. Speaking at the programme, DC Rohit Anand highlighted Kakching’s potential in Chak-hao (Black Rice) cultivation, stating that the region’s fertile land makes it ideal for developing into a model village for Chak-hao production. He encouraged efforts to export the crop beyond the state.
He also announced that a pilot project on contract farming is being initiated in Serou and Sugnu with a special focus on Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs). Interested farmers were urged to visit the DC Office or the District Agriculture or Horticulture Offices with their land records (patta) and identity documents.
The technical session featured expert lectures from Dr. Kh. Premila, SMS (Horticulture), KVK Thoubal on Nursery Management in Vegetable Crops; RK Lembisana, SMS (Home Science), KVK Thoubal on Food Processing and Value Addition of Horticultural Crops; and Dr. M. Thoithoi, retired SMS (Plant Protection), KVK Thoubal, on Disease and Pest Management Practices for Summer Vegetables.
More than 100 farmers attended the programme. As part of the initiative, each participant received a 25kg compost bag and a packet of NPK fertilizer from the District Horticulture Officer.
