Imphal, Oct 23:
In a significant move to ensure peace and order, the Manipur Government has declared a total curfew across the entire Revenue Jurisdiction of Tuibong Sub-Division in Churachandpur district. This decision comes in response to escalating tensions following a large protest organized by various local organizations in Tuibong bazar.
The protest was triggered by allegations against a non-local trader, who is accused of attempting to molest a tribal woman within his shop. The situation escalated as enraged volunteers blocked roads and set fire to logs in Tuibong bazar, demanding justice. In response to these actions, the protestors also announced a 12-hour bandh in Tuibong bazar, scheduled to end at 5 PM on Wednesday.
Reports indicate that the trader at the center of the controversy has since gone missing, raising further concerns among the local community. In light of these developments, Dharun Kumar S, the District Magistrate of Churachandpur, issued a prohibitory order effective from 6:00 AM on October 23, 2024, which will remain in effect until further notice.
The order prohibits unauthorized processions or unlawful assemblies of five or more individuals, as well as the carrying of weapons or objects that could be used as weapons, including sticks, rods, and stones. However, exceptions are made for government agencies tasked with maintaining law and order and ensuring essential services during this period.
