Ukhrul, April 22:
The Working Committee of the Tangkhul Naga Long (TNL) has condemned what it termed “orchestrated aggression” by Kuki groups at T Khullen along National Highway-2, alleging involvement of militants and lapses on the part of security forces in an incident that disrupted the ongoing shutdown called by the United Naga Council (UNC).
In a press communiqué, the apex Tangkhul civil body stated that the violence occurred during a three-day total shutdown being observed as a mourning protest over the killing of two Tangkhul civilians on April 18 near TM Kasom village along NH-202 in Ukhrul district. The shutdown was being enforced by volunteers of the Senapati District Students’ Association (SDSA).
According to TNL, the situation escalated after individuals from Changoubung village, reportedly backed by Kuki militants operating under the Suspension of Operations (SoO) pact, allegedly provoked volunteers enforcing the shutdown.
The organisation further alleged that tension intensified in the early hours when personnel of Kangpokpi Police arrived at the UNC check post at T Khullen and attempted to detain a volunteer. It claimed that the police action, coupled with alleged intimidation of volunteers, was followed by attempts by some individuals to dismantle barricades erected for the shutdown, leading to confrontation.
TNL stated that the confrontation turned violent, with stones allegedly thrown at Naga volunteers, resulting in injuries to several civilians and damage to two vehicles, including one belonging to the SDSA.
The communiqué also alleged that suspected Kuki militants opened fire using automatic weapons in the presence of State Police and Central security forces. It further claimed that security personnel responded by firing tear gas shells and blank rounds toward the volunteers, instead of acting against the alleged attackers.
Describing the incident as “deeply disturbing,” TNL accused the security forces of partiality and questioned their neutrality in handling the situation. It warned that such developments could hinder efforts to restore peace and normalcy in the region.
The organisation has demanded that the State Government identify those responsible for the violence and take appropriate legal action. It also urged authorities to ensure impartial enforcement of law to restore public confidence amid the prevailing security challenges in the hill districts.
The incident has further heightened tensions along key highways in the state, where shutdowns and protests continue following recent civilian killings, highlighting the fragile law-and-order situation.
