Thoubal District VDF body expresses disappointment over government response

The Thoubal District VDF Welfare Association has expressed disappointment and frustration over what it described as the state government’s inadequate response to its long-pending demands, alleging that the authorities are not treating the issues raised by VDF personnel with due seriousness.
In a statement issued by the association’s publicity secretary, Laishram Nabadip Meitei, it was stated that VDF personnel have repeatedly submitted memoranda to the government at various levels seeking revision of their pay structure, regularisation of service, and implementation of Section 18 of the Police Act, 1861. Despite these representations, the government has failed to take any concrete steps to address their grievances, the association alleged.
The association has been observing an indefinite gun-down and pen-down strike since December 23 in protest against the government’s inaction. According to the statement, the agitation was launched after the authorities failed to acknowledge the legitimacy of the demands and did not initiate meaningful measures to resolve them.
The association further claimed that the present PR Government had earlier assured that a pay hike would be implemented from January, but no tangible progress has been made so far. It expressed concern that prolonged neglect of the issue could push some VDF members into extreme distress, warning of the risk of drastic steps if the situation continues to be ignored.
The central committee of the VDF association has announced plans to organise a mass rally in Imphal on January 16, in which members of the Thoubal District VDF Welfare Association will participate in large numbers. The association appealed to the state government to urgently consider their demands and take immediate steps to address the grievances of VDF personnel.
The statement also called upon the authorities to acknowledge the hardships faced by VDF personnel, who, it said, work tirelessly to maintain law and order in the state, often at considerable personal risk. The association demanded improved working conditions, better facilities, and due recognition of their contribution to public safety.
