Thoubal Athokpam Battle heroes commemorated; Call to include 1891 war history in syllabus

The Justice Committee on Anglo-Manipuri War–1891 Martyrs and Freedom Fighters of Kangleipak (Manipur), in association with Ningthemcha Ningshing Lup, organised a solemn commemoration of the heroes of the Thoubal Athokpam Battle at Koubiliya Makhong Lampak Tengol Lampak, Thoubal Athokpam, today morning.
The programme paid floral tributes to martyrs, freedom fighters and unsung heroes who fought against British forces during the Anglo-Manipur War of 1891. The observance began with the arrival of dignitaries, lighting of the ceremonial lamp, a minute of silence and tribute offerings at Arong Turel.
MLA Surjakumar Okram of Khangabok Assembly Constituency attended as the Chief Guest, while Chairman of the Justice Committee Joychandra Konthoujam presided over the function. Guests of Honour included Wangkhemcha Shamjai, former president of AMWJU, social scientist Dhanabir Laishram, R.K. Joykumar Singh, a descendant of Sanakhya Yaiskulakpa, and Dr. L Romendro Singh of Thoubal College, among others.
Dr. R.K. Bidyabati Chanu, President of Ningthemcha Ningshing Lup, delivered the keynote address. Speakers highlighted the historical significance of the Thoubal Athokpam Battle and recalled the sacrifices made by Manipuri warriors during the 1891 war.
On the sidelines of the programme, a voluntary blood donation camp was inaugurated with participation from multiple organisations, including local civil bodies, health institutions and donor groups.
During the event, Chairman of the Justice Committee Joychandra Konthoujam, appealed for the inclusion of detailed accounts of the 1891 war—particularly the events linked to various battle columns and sites—in school and college curricula. The committee stated that proper documentation and academic inclusion would help instill a deeper sense of patriotism among the younger generation.
Speakers also called for unity among communities, noting that social cohesion is essential for safeguarding the territorial integrity and future of Manipur. Recalling historical accounts, it was stated that despite being perceived as a small kingdom, Manipur resisted British forces with courage and determination during the 1891 conflict.
The organisers stressed the need to preserve the legacy of past sacrifices and urged the present generation to remain committed to protecting the identity, unity and stability of the state.
The annual observance forms part of ongoing efforts to honour the legacy of Manipuri resistance during the 1891 war.
