Thadou Community withholds final rites of Nehkam Jomhao, demands justice

The Thadou Inpi Assam (TIA), in association with the Thadou Women’s Association, Thadou Literature Society, and Thadou Students’ Association, expressed deep anguish over the killing of Nehkam Jomhao, who was reportedly murdered by cadres of Kuki SoO militant groups—KRA, UKDA, and KLA—on the night of August 30, 2025, in Manja, Karbi Anglong.
Although the mortal remains of Jomhao have been recovered, the Thadou community resolved not to perform the final rites as a form of peaceful protest until justice is delivered.
According to reports, a detailed memorandum outlining their demands has been submitted to the Chief Minister of Assam, the Chief Executive Members of KAAC and NCHAC, the Union Home Secretary, the Chief Secretary and DGP of Assam, the Advisor (NE) to the Ministry of Home Affairs, as well as the Deputy Commissioners and SPs of Karbi Anglong and Dima Hasao.
The community’s urgent demands reportedly include the transfer of the case to the National Investigation Agency (NIA) to probe systematic persecution and militant links with Manipur violence, protection of Thadou identity, termination of the SoO agreement with KRA, UKDA, and KLA, relocation of militant camps, arrest of the masterminds behind the crime, ex-gratia compensation with a government job for the bereaved family, and the establishment of a Nehkam Thadou Peace Memorial in Karbi Anglong.
Community leaders recalled that the Thadou have faced repeated persecution since the Kuki-Thadou clashes of 1992–1993, during which Shri Jomhao’s elder brother was also killed. They stated that the present incident follows the same pattern of targeting Thadou voices advocating peace and identity.
The TIA clarified that the withholding of final rites should not be seen as defiance against the State but as a collective cry for justice, dignity, and security. It further urged both the Government of Assam and the Government of India to act urgently and restore harmony among communities in Karbi Anglong and Assam.
