Thadou Community welcomes peace initiatives

Imphal, Mar 4:

The Thadou Community International (TCI) has welcomed and appreciated the recent initiatives undertaken by the Government of India to restore peace and stability in Manipur. The organization has expressed optimism over the decisions made during the high-level security review meeting chaired by Union Home Minister on March 1, 2025, calling it an important step toward addressing the challenges faced by the people of the region.
After nearly two years of unrest, the new measures are seen as a significant effort in reconciliation and rebuilding. The commitment to ensuring free movement on all roads from March 8, 2025, has been described as a much-needed relief for communities affected by prolonged disruptions. The assurance of strict action against any obstructions to public movement has also been regarded as a decisive move toward restoring normalcy.
In addition, TCI has appreciated the government’s focus on enhancing border security and dismantling networks involved in extortion and drug trafficking, calling these steps necessary for long-term stability. The organization believes that such actions will not only strengthen national security but also contribute to the socio-economic well-being of future generations.
While supporting the government’s peace initiatives, TCI has emphasized the importance of inclusive and transparent implementation. The organization has stressed that sustainable peace can only be achieved through dialogue, trust-building, and ensuring that the concerns of all communities are fairly addressed. Citing global best practices in post-conflict societies, TCI has reiterated that justice, inclusion, and meaningful engagement with affected communities must be prioritized in Manipur’s path to stability.
The organization has also called upon all stakeholders, including government authorities, civil society, and community leaders, to work collectively in a spirit of cooperation.
TCI believes that a peaceful, secure, and prosperous Manipur is achievable only through genuine commitment to dialogue and reconciliation.
At the same time, TCI has underscored the importance of recognizing and respecting the distinct ethnic identities within Manipur. The organization has reiterated that the Thadou people have a unique and independent identity, separate from any other classification. Any misrepresentation of Thadou as part of another group has been strongly opposed, with TCI stating that such portrayals do not reflect the true aspirations and interests of the Thadou people.
In reaffirming their stance, TCI has referred to the Thadou Convention Declaration – 2024, which states:
“Thadou is a distinct ethnic group of people. Thadou is not Kuki, or underneath Kuki, or part of Kuki, but a separate, independent entity from Kuki. Any organization that incorporates ‘Thadou’ but espouses Kuki and misportrays Thadou as Kuki or a part of Kuki is illegitimate and does not represent Thadou people and interests.”
Looking ahead, TCI has urged the Government of India to actively engage with the Thadou community to ensure that their voices are heard in the decision-making process. The organization has expressed readiness to collaborate with all stakeholders to contribute toward lasting peace and development in Manipur.
With a firm commitment to peacebuilding, TCI has called for constructive dialogue with relevant authorities and civil society organizations, reinforcing its dedication to a peaceful and harmonious future for all communities in the state.
