Tension erupts in Keishamthong over alleged non-distribution of PDS rice

Tension broke out in Keishamthong Assembly Constituency after a large group of local Meira Paibis stormed the residence of MLA Sapam Nishikant Singh, alleging non-distribution of PDS rice for the past three months.
The protestors accused the legislator of failing to ensure fair allocation of essential food grains to households in the constituency. Earlier, a delegation of meira paibis had spoken to the MLA over the phone regarding the issue. However, his reported response that the rice quotas had been “collected by Naharol”—a term commonly used to refer to underground groups—sparked further outrage.
The agitated women leaders demanded an immediate clarification from the MLA regarding his remarks and called upon the so-called “Naharol” to state whether they had indeed collected the rice quota meant for the public.
According to local residents, the rice stock that should have been distributed under the Public Distribution System has not reached beneficiaries in Keishamthong for three consecutive months, causing widespread frustration. The protestors maintained that the lapses in distribution have severely affected families dependent on subsidised food grains.
As the situation grew tense, security personnel were deployed near the MLA’s residence to prevent escalation. Community leaders have urged both the government and local authorities to address the matter promptly and ensure transparency in the distribution process.
