High voltage tension erupted today in front of Lilong Police Station today morning after a team of 33 Assam Rifles arrested four village defenders from Lilong area. Report said that 29 (Twenty-nine) women protestors were injured in the AR action.
The Assam Rifles claimed to have seized a 51 mm mortar from a Tata Safari vehicle bearing registration no AS01-BH-4431 while conducting frisking at Lilong area in Thoubal district at around 10 pm yesterday. However, the claim was refuted by the locals stating that those arrested are village defenders.
Report said that the Assam Rifles troopers which have its post in the adjoining area of Lilong Police Station arrested the four persons in front of their post. The report about the arrest of the four people spread far and wide among the women folk who are guarding their villages in Thoubal district. Large number of women then thronged to the Assam Rifles post at Lilong demanding the release of the 4 persons. The personnel of the Assam Rifles in its attempt to disperse the women folk, used excessive acts even hitting the women folk with the rifle butt. In the AR action, at least 29 women protestors were injured. They were evacuated at Thoubal district hospital. Among them, the condition of the 43 years old Th. Pakpi of Thoubal Kiyam sustain serious injury and was referred to RIMS hospital.
According to source, the 4 arrested persons were handed over to Lilong Police Station. They were later released on bail by Duty Magistrate Thoubal.
